Council Meeting 21st July

DRD committee members David Mawby and Socs Cappas spoke to Agenda Item 5.2 — Housing and State Infrastructure in Canada Bay at the Public Forum of Council’s monthly meeting to lobby for a clear and concise Desirable Future Character statement for Drummoyne.

If we don’t have a clear one then developers will try to tell us what that is.

A summary of David’s talk is…
Council should work with the community to decide what Drummoyne should look like in the future through a clear master plan and "future character" statement.

Developers are currently using their own proposals to argue that taller buildings represent Drummoyne's future, even though Council has never agreed on that vision.

The request to Council is simple: define Drummoyne's future character first, then assess new developments against that agreed vision. This will ensure growth protects the suburb's trees, foreshore, neighbourhood character and quality of life while still providing more housing.

A summary of Socs’ talk is…
The City of Canada Bay has set out a vision for the desired future of the LGA, including Drummoyne in parts of its Local Strategic Planning Statement 2020 and provided controls to help support that in its Development Control Plan PART C Heritage v3 26/6/2025.

We need that vision to be restated much more explicitly to stop assertions from developers that the upper limits of the SEPP define the desired future for Drummoyne.
